A portable reading practice

Ask four questions of every historical claim.

Who made the claim? Which evidence supports it? What context changes its meaning? What remains uncertain? These questions are simple enough to remember and strong enough to slow down a familiar story.

Practice in the open course
  • Name the source and its distance from the event.
  • Separate evidence from later interpretation.
  • Compare regions before claiming uniformity.
  • State the limit of what the evidence can show.
